Atlas
Atlas holds Earth. Credit NASA
Robotic Atlas holding the planet Earth on its shoulders. Animation attempts to convey how technology supports the world as we know it. A sense of the vulnerability of the Earth is implied, as is the idea of heroic technological strength. Atlas was a titan from Greek mythology who was condemned by Zeus to bare the celestial sphere on his shoulders, holding it aloft from Gaia. Atlas Telemon or Atlas who Endures procured the Golden apples from his daughters the Hesperides for Heracles. Heracles had offered to hold the heavens aloft whilst Atlas Telemon or Atlas who Endures procured the Golden apples from his daughters the Hesperides. Atlas was loath to resume his burden, upon his return with apples. He offered to deliver them instead. Heracles agreed asking only that Atlas support the celestial sphere long enough for him to adjust his cloak as padding for his shoulders. As soon as Atlas took the weight of the stars on his shoulders again, Heracles departed.
