Herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1) particle, Herpes image. Herpes capsid protean data source. HSV particles (virions) are composed of an outer lipid (fatty) envelope and an icosahedral protein core (capsid) encasing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the genetic material of the virus. HSV-1, more commonly known as oral herpes, causes sores around the mouth and lips called fever blisters or cold sores.
