The groups, or types are determined by the presence or absence of antigenic substances found on the red blood cell surfaces. Red blood cells (RBC) are also called erythrocytes. The antigens may consist of carbohydrates, proteins, glycoproteins or glycolipids. Blood types are typically inherited.
