Commonly known as bird flu, H5N1 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus. As yet no evidence for human to human transmission of bird flu, those humans who have caught it has extensive contact with infected birds. However, fifty percent of those infected with bird flu (H5N1) went on to die. H5N1 has the potential to reassort or mutate into a virus capable of efficient human to human transmission. Considering that H5N1 mutates frequently, and is found throughout bird populations, bird flu (H5N1) is often regarded as the world’s largest current pandemic threat.

Tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow growing, small rod shaped, aerobic bacterium. Tuberculosis affects the lungs (pulmonary tuberculosis) and may also affect the central nervous system (meningitis) and the circulatory system (Miliary tuberculosis). Tuberculosis is a common disease in developing countries, though tuberculosis is increasing in the developed world amongst people with a compromised immune system.

Smallpox (Variola / Variola vera), two types: Variola major and Variola minor. Variola major is the more deadly form killing twenty to forty percent of its victims. Smallpox was responsible for roughly 300 to 500 deaths in the 20th Century until a series of vaccination campaigns in 1979 eradicated it.
