Human papillomavirus 16, animated model. HPV16 is a sexually-transmitted virus that is a major cause of cervical cancer, as well as other cancers of the anogenital region. It is one of the types of HPV that is targetted by HPV vaccines, such as Gardasil and Cervarix. In many countries, these are routinely given to women before they become sexually active, to reduce the chances of their developing cervical cancer following infection. HPV is a double-stranded DVA virus.
